Words of Faith

Spirit to Spirit Writing Project

The word Lent comes from an old English word meaning lengthening of days. In Christianity, it refers to the time before Easter, traditionally observed through repentance and learning. It's a season to be intentional about changing and growing. Some people give up items to create space and time for new life and habits to grow. Instead of giving something up, I invite you to try to commit to answering these writing prompts each of the 40 days of Lent. The discipline it takes to set aside time each day to reflect and write about God and your relationship with spirituality is a journey that you will emerge from with a renewed spirit. Every writer has their own special voice to add to this project, whether poetry, prose, essay, thoughts, lists, or through comments, prayer, and encouragement.

How do I participate?
Each day, a writing prompt will be posted. A prompt is a question or statement that is meant to inspire your thoughts in whatever genre you feel moved to write. Post your reflections as a comment under each day's prompt (for further instructions, see 'How To Post' on the right side of the page). It is up to you if you write, read, or pray along with us each of the 40 days of Lent or just drop in from time to time when the spirit moves you to participate. Writing regularly is a discipline that many writers struggle with and this is a way to involve that discipline as a Lenten practice. Through writing and leaving encouraging words for others in this project, we become a supportive spiritual writing community

God's Laughter

Lenten Writing Prompt #8
Have you ever seen or experienced the laughter of God?  What do you think God's laughter would look like?  Feel like?  Sound like?  Is there an example of someone laughing, which reminded you of what God's laughter would sound like?

  1. Overflowing Joy

Conversation bubbled alive, I AM considered the plan.
Spirit lovingly looked to Creator one more time.
Word Become Flesh just a concept not a man.
“Let us set in motion the greatest rhyme.”

Not a trace of grim accompanied the move.
Joyfully, the threesome yet one, joined being.
“This Companion of Ours will find Our groove.”
“Together life begins, love becomes seeing.”

As molecules unnumbered, chuckles burst restraint.
Designer gently lifting up results to espy,
“Shall the cloud cover lessen, might ease complaint,
Our presence, passion, joy will reason defy.”

Throughout history laughter has betrayed the day.
Gallows humor writ large on the walls.
Bawdy, profane, kindly, quick witted have their say,
Back-street alleys, custodians’ rooms, palace halls.

Built into the fabric of creations’ complex quilt,
Threads of humor pull together life’s great tome.
Sin’s ‘tempt to fracture just empty fisted guilt.
Spirit touches each created one, summoning home.

No list here to make, not a serial gathering of laughs.
A smile in the heart resonates onto the face.
Quiet souls attend the joyful mirth down life’s paths.
Faith asks a boon of the follower, note joys’ trace.

Back to the Control Room par excellence.
A fine, raucous time seems to be going on.
Combination rock concert, hoedown, street dance,
All of God’s Self getting life focused each dawn.

Listen up! There it goes again. That infectious chuckle.
Don’t miss the joke. Find the punch line fine.
Life is too important to take seriously, so unbuckle.
Pass on hope, light your light, explore humor’s mine.

  2. "The joy of the Lord is my strength." Nehemiah

God's laughter is the wind beneath the wings of a soaring eagle. It catches the up-drafts and carries us above the sadness of war and violence, and gives us fresh perspective to see the possibility of peace and kindness.

  3. I Am Waiting to Hear God

Adam and Eve listened to God
    ....in the garden
Abraham negotiated with an angry God
    ....over the destruction of Sodom
    Moses talked with God
    ....in the burning bush
    Elijah heard God
    ....in the still small voice
    David listened to God
    ....in melodies
    Mary heard God
....through an angel and gave birth to the Christ child
    Joseph took directions from God
    ....in a dream
I am waiting to hear God
    ....in a slow, building,
    ....deep rumbling,
    ....full on,
    ....belly laugh!
    Maybe it’s just me
....but I think I will know who it is
    ....when I hear it.
    I can’t wait!

  5. We don't hear it as much as we experience God's laughter in a myriad of senses. God's laughter is evident every time there's a downpour when the weather forecaster predicts a sunny day, when hippopotamas open their great cavernous mouths, when doctors scratch their heads in disbelief after a miracle occurs in an impossible situation, when toddlers discover the messy delights of immersing themselves in mud, when bumble bees fly even though it's aerodynamically not possible for them to do so, when biologists declare that jelly fish don't have brains yet are unable to explain how the translucent lovelies perform complex feeding and swimming manuevers. The list goes on and on. God's laughter continually swirls around us and those delicious moments when we recognize it are treasured indeed!

  6. Do you know the sound of God’s laughter? God delights in all of creation. Most of all, rejoices in the joy of God’s people.

Did you ever see the hands of a three-year-old playing with Cheerios in the spilled milk on the table? Hear his giggle as the soggy round O is chased by his fingertip?

Did you ever taste the fizzy bubbles in bath-water as your tub fills, and your bubbly chuckles of pleasure rise up?

Did your toes ever touch the squishy mud oozing up between your barefoot toes in spring, and you chortled gleefully?

Did you ever hear the sound of geese flying north, honking in unison, sounding like children at play?

Did you ever smell warm spicy cookies as they come from the oven, grinning with anticipation as your taste buds salivate?

That is the laughter of God, reflected in God’s creation.
