Jesus came and they were ready. They laid palm branches in his path to make it comfortable and special. He was a guest and they were the host. Guests are special but they’re not a real part, not an intimate part, of our lives. We clean the house for them. We are on our best behavior for them. Perhaps that is what they expect. That was never God’s intention, to be kept at arm’s length to use the good silver to eat off the good china. That is how it started out on that first Palm Sunday. But Jesus couldn’t leave them to their own devices. He wouldn’t keep his distance. So they had him arrested and tried and convicted and executed.
Oh, he would come back anyway. Jesus can never leave us to our own devices.
